Here at LocaCarnivore Magazine, we’re all about filling the freezer without spending a fortune. We love old school methods and gear which just work with no fuss or bother, or large cash. We also love minimalist hunting. We always ask ourselves, do we need this or that, what can we do without?
We ran across this video the other day and had to share it with you, our devoted fans and readers. It’s a classic. A straight shootin’ turkey hunter with many seasons under his belt shows you how to get a gobbler with bare bones equipment.
Don’t get us wrong, if you want the fancy gear, by all means knock yourself out. However, you don’t need the latest titanium shotgun with GPS infra-red laser motion detection, or big-dollar discarding sabot, guided flechette turkey loads. It just so happens we’ve used an old Stevens single shot with modified choke just like in the video for years, all be it ours is 20 gauge. Nope, you don’t have to have a 12 gauge for turkey either, or a semi-auto, or a 3D adaptive camo trigger guard. Check out this guy’s caller set up. It’s backwoods low-tech, but pure genius.
There is one thing we prefer over the video’s recommendation. While we agree you don’t need magnum loads, and No. 6 shot is adequate for turkey, we do prefer copper plated shot over straight lead shot. The copper gets through those kevlar-like feathers better, and transfers little or no lead to the meat (lead is bad to eat, FYI). We’ve used both No. 6 and No. 5 shot but we like the fives a bit better for gobblers.
So, watch and learn how to hunt turkey the minimalist, low-tech, low budget way.
