Hunting Rifle Accuracy: The Truth

Hunting rifle accuracy: the truth.

How accurate a hunting rifle do you need?  The gun industry and long-range hunting cultists have their opinions, which have shaped the conversation for a decade or two.  The answer, as with most complex realities, is not as clear cut as many people would prefer.

Let’s get one thing straight up front.  No one has ever complained they owned too accurate a rifle.  Accuracy is similar to power: there is no such thing as too much.  When it comes to hunting rifles, the accuracy question has an answer which surprises a good many hunters–and angers a few more.

Accuracy is defined as how close together a rifle put shots on target as measured in MOA (Minute Of Angle).  To simplify the math, one MOA is a hair over one-inch in diameter at 100 yards.  You metric folks will just have to catch up here.  This angular shot dispersion continues downrange at a predictable, linear rate.  No need to thank me now, it’s just math.  Given one MOA is an inch at 100 yards, a shot group will widen to two inches at 200 yards, three inches at 300, and so on, to infinity.

The mainstream gun media, and the firearms industry as well, is fixated on the notion any rifle which does not shoot one MOA is useless.  Trouble is, there’s not a single deer, elk, or moose out there which has heard such an idea.
