Can You Still Subsistence Hunt In The U.S.?

Can you still subsistence hunt in the U.S.?

What does it mean to subsistence hunt?  In simple terms it is feeding yourself off the land.  At one time, people in the United States–what would become the United States–subsistence hunted and had done so for over 12,000 years.  By the late 20th Century, few places existed in the country where you could still do this.  Alaska is the last bastion for true subsistence hunters, and carries a legal designation there.  To get the necessary permits, you must navigate a Byzantine administrative labyrinth, but it can be done.

Nowadays in the lower 48 states, about the closest one can come is what I call semi-subsistence hunting.  A semi-subsistence hunter is someone who derives fifty percent or more of their meat from hunting.  Some might say it is impossible to live such a life style in modern America.  The good news is if you are willing to do a little research, and possibly relocate, you can still live in a place which supports such activity.

The trick then is to figure out where in this large country to do this.  There are numerous factors to consider, but once you settle on a location, you can obtain the best food on the planet–game meat.  When you subsistence hunt you’ll find many advantages, and a few draw backs.  However, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

To learn all the ins and outs when it comes to subsistence and semi-subsistence hunting in the United States, you must watch this informative video.  In it, a genuine semi-subsistence hunter walks you thorough every thing you need to know about this fascinating life style.  You’ll learn the benefits and how to deal with the downsides.  Most important, though, you’ll learn how to assess a prospective location for its subsistence hunting potential.  Take a look, you’ll be glad you did.
