Mere days after a Federal Judge put the brakes on planned grizzly bear hunts in Wyoming and Idaho and months after Montana halted its own hunt, a male grizzly mauled a man in Montana. The victim, who survived the assault, and a partner were on a hunt for other game in the Blackfeet Nation’s tribal lands when the older bear attacked. The bear died during the incident, although the circumstances have not been released. Blackfeet wildlife officials have opened an investigation into the matter.
Montana and surrounding states have seen numerous grizzly attacks on humans as the notoriously aggressive predators’ population burgeons throughout the northern Rocky Mountain region.
